I’ve been thinking about silence for the past year. I’ve collected quotes describing the qualities of silence. I have a dictionary of words that describe the quality of silence. I have done interviews and recorded answers to how people would describe the quality of silence in their life. In my journal I’ve noted what silence means to me but also how it relates to my life.

Thinking about the following questions:

What are the things that are left unsaid between people? What do we hide when we talk to one another? What do we hide from ourselves? How are our learned understandings and social protocols a product of reading silence?

What can I generate that is at the intersection of this? How can I deconstruct our learned behaviors as social protocols of reading silence? How does the internal differ from the external? How do we illustrate the barriers that we hold?

How can silence take up space

  1. A noisy page with words one after the other meaning
  2. Words broken down by phonetics
  3. Series of conversations that “manage silence”
    1. conversation with many dots (ellipses)
    2. conversation with different answer responses
    3. one-sided conversation
    4. two-panel | conversation about internal monologue
      1. mental silence
      2. mental noisiness
